Correlation of the tephra beds in the middle Pleistocene Older Ontake Volcano with those in the Kazusa Group in Boso Peninsula, Central Japan
Journal of the Geological Society of Japan,111(7):417-433 2005
Author:Yoshihiro Takeshita, Yasuyuki Miyake, Jun’ichi Sakai
Abstract:Heavy mineral assemblage and chemical compositions of hornblende of nine middle Pleistocene tephra beds (Ku6E, Ku5C, Byakubi tephra, Ka2.4A, Ka2.4B, Ch3, Ch1.5, Ks18, Ks12) from the Kazusa Group, in Boso Peninsula were examined in order to correlate with the tephra from the Older Ontake Volcano in central Japan. Hornblende compositions from the nine tephra beds are distinguishable each other and two of them, Byakubi tephra (BYK) and Ks12 tephra, were correlated with tephras from the Older Ontake Volcano, YUT4 or 5 of the H Substage and KZT of the Lava Stage, respectively. The age of these tephra beds of the Kazusa Group can be inferred from the stratigraphic relationships with dated lavas on the foot of the Older Ontake Volcano, and from well-known widespread tephras and magnetostratigraphy in the Boso Peninsula. Correlated these two tephra beds became valuable marker tephras for geochronological studies of both inland and marine sediments from central Japan. It should be also emphasized that the BYK and YUT4 or 5 can provide a datum plane of the early-middle Pleistocene boundary in both regions. The present study indicates that hornblende chemistry can be useful tool for correlation of highly weathered tephra, in which volcanic glass is strongly altered.

Volcanic history of the middle Pleistocene Older Ontake Volcano, Central Japan-Inferences from tephrostratigraphy and petrography-
Journal of the Geological Society of Japan,110(3):158-174 2004
Author:Yoshihiro Takeshita
Abstract:Ontake volcano is situated at the southern margin of the Norikura volcanic chain, central Japan. The volcano consists of the Older (0.78-0.39Ma) and Younger (0.09-0.02Ma) Ontake volcanoes with long dormancy between them. Almost all of the tephra (air fall tephra and pyroclastic flow deposits) from the Older Ontake Volcano are described about their lithofacies and heavy mineral assemblage. And some of them are further studied on their petrographic / mineralogic features ; such as grain compositions, heavy mineral compositions and chemical compositions of hornblende and pyroxenes. Tephrostratigraphy of the Older Ontake volcano was established using stratigraphic relations with the dated lavas, and the petrographic features of tephra. Conclusively, the activity of the Older Ontake Volcano was divided into Tephra Stage (before 0.78-0.64Ma) and Lava Stage(0.64-0.39Ma) based on the mode of eruptiond; the Tephra Stage being characterized by effusion of many air fall tephra and pyroclastic flows, whereas the Lava Stage contains many thicker lavas. The Tephra Stage is further subdivided into H Substage(before 0.78Ma), PH Substage(0.78-0.70Ma) and OP Substage(0.70-0.64Ma) using the assemblage of dominant heavy minerals in the air fall tephra as follows : H Substage ; green hornblende, PH Substage ; pyroxenes and brown hornblende, OP Substage ; olivine and pyroxenes. Ages of each Stage and Substage were inferred from the stratigraphic relations with the dated lavas. Each of the Stages and Substages is distinguishable based on not only heavy mineral assemblage but also chemical compositions of hornblende and pyroxenes in the air fall tephra.
