Cu2ZnSnS4 thin-film solar cells by a closed tube sulfurization under saturated sulfur vapor pressure Jpn J. Appl. Phys.,61:095508-1-095508-6 2022(Aug.) Author:Myo Than Htay, Osamu Imai, Kazutomo Kosaka, Noritaka Momose, Yoshio Hashimoto Abstract:The CdS/Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) heterojunction thin-film solar cells were fabricated via a closed tube sulfurization under saturated sulfur vapor pressure. A significant improvement in the crystalline quality of the CZTS polycrystalline thin film was achieved when the Cu-Zn-Sn metallic-alloy thin film was sulfurized under saturated sulfur vapor pressure of 4.3atm at 590°C due to efficient suppression of re-evaporation of Zn and Sn species during the growth process. Accordingly, the open circuit voltage and short circuit current density of the CdS/CZTS heterojunction device were enhanced resulting in the improvement of power conversion efficiency over 1.7 times compared to the best cell fabricated by the conventional processes under unsaturated sulfur vapor pressure of 1.5 atm.

Realization of synaptic learning and memory functions in Y2O3 based memristive device fabricated by dual ion beam sputtering Nanotechnology,29(5):055203 2018(Jan. 05) Author:Mangal Das; Amitesh Kumar; Rohit Singh; Myo Than Htay; Shaibal Mukherjee Abstract:Single synaptic device with inherent learning and memory functions is demonstrated based on a forming-free amorphous Y2O3 (yttria) memristor fabricated by dual ion beam sputtering system. Synaptic functions such as nonlinear transmission characteristics, long-term plasticity, short-term plasticity and 'learning behavior (LB)' are achieved using a single synaptic device based on cost-effective metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structure. An 'LB' function is demonstrated, for the first time in the literature, for a yttria based memristor, which bears a resemblance to certain memory functions of biological systems. The realization of key synaptic functions in a cost-effective MIS structure would promote much cheaper synapse for artificial neural network.

Forming-free high-endurance Al/ZnO/Al memristor fabricated by dual ion beam sputtering APPLIED PHYSICS LETTERS,110(25):253509 2017(Jun.) Author:Amitesh Kumar; Mangal Das; Vivek Garg; Brajendra S. Sengar; Myo Than Htay; Shailendra Kumar; Abhinav Kranti; Shaibal Mukherjee Abstract:We report dual ion beam sputtering fabrication of an Al/ZnO/Al memristor displaying forming-free bipolar resistive switching characteristics with memristive behavior without necessitating any post-processing steps. A nearly amorphous ZnO thin film and an appropriate concentration of oxygen vacancies play a significant role in imparting forming-free, stable, and reliable behavior to memory cells. Besides, sufficient non-lattice oxygen ions in the film play a crucial role in the resistive switching process. The AlOx interface layer is observed to strongly affect the switching mechanism in the memory device by altering the barrier at the Al/ZnO interface. The device shows stable switching behavior for >250 cycles with good retention and stable set/reset voltages. Published by AIP Publishing.

Effect of ultrasonically generated water vapor treatment on the Cu2ZnSnS4/CdS heterojunction-based photovoltaic cells SOLAR ENERGY MATERIALS AND SOLAR CELLS,157:765-776 2016(Dec.) Author:Myo Than Htay; Ryosuke Fujimura; Remi Hasuike; Kazushi Takei; Noritaka Momose; Yoshio Hashimoto; Kentaro Ito Abstract:The surface treatment of Cu2ZnSnS4 thin films was carried out by utilizing ultrasonically generated water vapor. Suppression of the unintentional fluctuation of chemical composition near the heterointerface and enhancement in the homogeneity of CdS deposition on the Cu2ZnSnS4 thin films were observed in the samples with water vapor treatment at the temperatures between 250 degrees C and 350 degrees C. The effect on the variation of conduction band and valence band offsets at the Cu2ZnSnS4/CdS heterojunction, which was observed to be in a staggered alignment, was less than +/- 50 meV due to the treatment. Reproducibility of the cell characteristics was improved by the H2O spray treatment of the Cu2ZnSnS4 absorbers before the deposition of CdS buffer layers. At treatment temperature of 300 degrees C, the improvement of efficiency by about 25% compared to that of the untreated samples was achieved. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Synthesis of a cuprite thin film by oxidation of a Cu metal precursor utilizing ultrasonically generated water vapor THIN SOLID FILMS,556:211-215 2014(Apr.) Author:Myo Than Htay; Masahiko Okamura; Ryo Yoshizawa; Yoshio Hashimoto; Kentaro Ito Abstract:A Cu2O thin film of cuprite crystal structure was fabricated via a decomposition reaction of water vapor generated by ultrasonic vibration. The thin film, which was grown on a soda-lime glass substrate at 530 degrees C, exhibited a prominent (111) preferred orientation with an optical bandgap of about 2.1 eV and resistivity of 2.81 x 10(4) Omega cm. Generation of H-2 gas during the reaction process contributed to suppressing the growth of impurity tenorite phase. In a conventional process of thermal oxidation, the formation of the cuprite phase was always accompanied by that of the tenorite phase due to an excess oxygen exposure near the surface of the films. A Simple Approach in Estimating the Effectiveness of Adapting Mirror Concentrator and Tracking Mechanism for PV Arrays in the Tropics INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHOTOENERGY,2014:341863 2014 Author:M. E. Ya'acob; H. Hizam; H. Abdul Rahman; W. Z. Wan Omar; Myo Than Htay; A. H. M. A. Rahim Abstract:Mirror concentrating element and tracking mechanism has been seriously investigated and widely adapted in solar PV technology. In this study, a practical in-field method is conducted in Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia, for the two technologies in comparison to the common fixed flat PV arrays. The data sampling process is measured under stochastic weather characteristics with the main target of calculating the effectiveness of PV power output. The data are monitored, recorded, and analysed in real time via GPRS online monitoring system for 10 consecutive months. The analysis is based on a simple comparison of the actual daily power generation from each PV generator with statistical analysis of multiple linear regression (MLR) and analysis of variance test (ANOVA). From the analysis, it is shown that tracking mechanism generates approximately 88 Watts (9.4%) compared to the mirror concentrator which generates 144 Watts (23.4%) of the cumulative dc power for different array configurations at standard testing condition (STC) references. The significant increase in power generation shows feasibilities of implying both mechanisms for PV generators and thus contributes to additional reference in PV array design.
Calculating electrical and thermal characteristics of multiple PV array configurations installed in the tropics ENERGY CONVERSION AND MANAGEMENT,75:418-424 2013(Nov.) Author:M. Effendy Ya'acob; Hashim Hizam; Myo Than Htay; M. Amran M. Radzi; Tamer Khatib; M. Bakri A Abstract:This study intends to define the electrical characteristics and temperature equations of PV array installed in the tropics based on Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) model. Ten units of 1 kW rated PV array namely Fixed Flat (FF), Tracking Flat (TF) and Concentrating (CPV) have been installed at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang District, Malaysia at the coordinate of 2 degrees 59'20 '' N:101 degrees 43'30 '' E with tropical-based ground conditions. Electrical characteristics are the main elements of contributions where five operating conditions for CEEG PV Module are applied based on the SNL model to produce array parameter values. It is found that FF array projects the highest operating value of 12.06 A (I-sc), 11.55 A (I-mp), 524.78 V (V-oc), 89.5 V (V-mp), and 1033.7 W (P-mp) with good regression fit and strong correlation R-2 of more than 0.5. The versatility and accuracy of this work have been validated and applied for three different types of PV array system installed in the equatorial doldrum spot of uniform temperature-irradiance, high in humidity-rainfall and generally light wind field conditions. The parameters are calculated using filtered field data sampled at STC of 5% tolerance. Focal point of calculating array temperature (T-array) as means of thermal effect on multiple PV array configurations is highlighted based on recent study on T-c equations and Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) analysis using field data at site. Author:Noritaka Momose; Myo Than Htay; Kazuki Sakurai; Shota Iwano; Yoshio Hashimoto; Kentaro Ito Abstract:A Cu2ZnSn(SxSe1-x)(4) (CZTSSe) solid alloy was prepared by reacting a metallic precursor with sulfur and selenium in a closed tube simultaneously. It was confirmed that the CZTSSe alloy could be synthesized over the whole compositional range and its lattice transformation was in good agreement with Vegard's law. The crystal grain size and electrical conductivity were enhanced when the selenium content was increased. In a CdS/CZTSSe heterojunction solar cell, the photovoltaic efficiency was improved due to the enhancement of the short-circuit current in accordance with the narrowing of the optical bandgap of the CZTSSe absorber. Cu2ZnSnS4 Thin Film Solar Cells Utilizing Sulfurization of Metallic Precursor Prepared by Simultaneous Sputtering of Metal Targets JAPANESE JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS,50(1):01BG091-01BG094 2011(Jan.) Author:Noritaka Momose; Myo Than Htay; Takuto Yudasaka; Shigeo Igarashi; Takuro Seki; Shota Iwano; Yoshio Hashimoto; Kentaro Ito Abstract:Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin films were prepared by simultaneous sputtering of metallic targets and sulfurizing a metallic precursor under elemental sulfur atmosphere in a sealed tube. Subsequently, they were applied to the fabrication of thin film solar cells. The precursors with desired compositional ratio and thickness were obtained by controlling the area ratio of sputtering targets and also sputtering parameters. We have succeeded in obtaining high-quality polycrystalline CZTS thin films by sulfurization under a sulfur vapor pressure higher than atmospheric pressure. A CZTS-based solar cell with 3.7% conversion efficiency was obtained from CZTS films sulfurized at 590 degrees C for 7 min. (c) 2011 The Japan Society of Applied Physics
Position-selective growth of ZnO nanowires by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis JOURNAL OF CRYSTAL GROWTH,311(20):4499-4504 2009(Oct.) Author:Myo Than Htay; Yoshio Hashimoto; Noritaka Momose; Kentaro Ito Abstract:Position-selective growth of ZnO nanowires was realized by utilizing a patterned soda-lime glass layer. The soda-lime glass layer contributes as the origin of nucleation sites for the growth of nanowires in economically viable ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique. The formation of nanowires took place with good reproducibility at relatively low substrate temperatures of 250-400 degrees C when the soda-lime glass matrix was present at the surface of substrates, and such a nitrate compound as nitric acid or nitrate salt was mixed in the precursor solutions. Based on this technique, the position-selective growth and density-controlled growth of ZnO nanowires can be performed on various types of substrate. The presence of a CaO compound in the glass matrix was revealed as an important condition to grow the nanowires. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Synthesis of optical quality ZnO nanowires utilizing ultrasonic spray pyrolysis JOURNAL OF MATERIALS SCIENCE-MATERIALS IN ELECTRONICS,20(1):341-345 2009(Jan.) Author:Myo Than Htay; Yuji Tani; Yoshio Hashimoto; Kentaro Ito Abstract:ZnO nanowires were grown by an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique. The aspect ratio and size of the wire were dependent mainly on the pH value of a precursor solution and the growth temperature. Photoluminescence properties and morphologies of submicron-sized ZnO crystals prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis JAPANESE JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS,47(1):541-545 2008(Jan.) Author:Myo Than Htay; Minoru Itoh; Yoshio Hashimoto; Kentaro Ito Abstract:Spectral features of the near-band-edge photoluminescence (PL) of submicron-sized ZnO crystals such as nanoplatelets, nanowires, and nanorods grown by an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) technique were investigated. The measurements of time-integrated and time-resolved PL spectra were performed in the temperature range of 8 - 300 K under various excitation densities by using the fourth harmonies (4.66 eV) of a Nd:YAG laser. Exciton-related emission bands were clearly observed in the ZnO crystals having different morphologies. In nanoplatelets, an emission band originating from radiative recombination of donor-acceptor pairs was a] so found at around 3.17 eV, indicating the existence of acceptor centers. The binding energies of donor and acceptor were about 53 and 200meV, respectively. In nanowires, the intensity of an emission band peaking at 3.32eV obeyed a quadratic dependency on the density of excitation. This fact shows that an inelastic exciton-exciton scattering process is efficient in the nanowires because of high crystal quality.
Growth of ZnO submicron single-crystalline platelets, wires, and rods by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis JAPANESE JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS PART 1-REGULAR PAPERS BRIEF COMMUNICATIONS & REVIEW PAPERS,46(1):440-448 2007(Jan.) Author:Myo Than Htay; Yoshio Hashimoto; Kentaro Ito Abstract:Submicron single crystals of ZnO were grown by spray pyrolysis: the mist of an aqueous solution was generated by ultrasonic agitation and then pyrolyzed on a heated glass substrate. Hexagonal platelets of ZnO 10-90nm thick were obtained when ammonium acetate was incorporated into the precursor solution of zinc acetate. Single-crystalline wires and rods, which were 50-150 and 300-4000nm thick respectively, were obtained when indium nitrate was co-incorporated into the solution as a metal catalyst. The crystallographic direction of wires and rods was parallel to one of the [0001], [10 (1) over bar0], or [11 (2) over bar] axis of wurtzite. As substrate temperature increased, the aspect ratio of the crystal thus tended to decrease. Structural and compositional analyses of these crystals were performed by scanning electron microscopy, scanning ion microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrocopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.
