地下・海底で活躍するカーボンナノチューブ複合ゴム

Abstract:Production environment of natural gas and oil, which is one of the most important resources, have become increasingly stringent. Working temperature and pressure environment is approaching to 200°C and to 200 MPa, respectively. Wells for natural gas and oil is surrounded by a substance having a high aggression, such as hydrogen sulfide, strong acid and strong alkali. We have to challenge the production in harsh environments of deep underground in this way. Carbon black reinforced rubber have been used for many years as an important component in the oil industry, but these rubber did not lead to major advances in the oil field. Recently, the rubber composites obtained from the carbon nanotubes cellulation technology increases operational ratings from 175°C and 140 MPa to 260°C and 240 MPa for deeper, hotter conditions, and it is especially appropriate for deepwater reservoirs. In this paper, we describe a cellulation technology and explain the actual situation of the rubber playing an active part in an environment of the worst.

Abstract:This paper reports changes in the electrical conductivity of multi-wall carbon nanotube/natural rubber (MWNT/NR) composites as a function of nanotube loading and nanotube diameter (φ). The percolation threshold of the φ13 nm MWNT/NR composite was found at a filler content of 2.9 wt%. A volume resistivity of a few 10−2 Ωm was obtained at 16.7 wt% of φ13 nm MWNTs, which is almost half the 37.5 wt% needed for φ67 nm MWNTs. It has been found that the electrical resistivity depends little on the shape of the MWNTs based on the two-dimensional models of electrical path for the straight and round MWNTs. Since the good mechanical properties of thin MWNT/NR composites at 120 °C have already been reported, it would be expected that the application of these composites might be broaden.

Abstract:多層カーボンナノチューブ(MWCNT)と末端修飾ポリスチレン-block-ポリ(エチレンーCO-ブチレン)-block-ポリスチレン(SEBS)との複合物を調製し,それらの材料間の界面接着の効果が機械的物性に及ぼす影響を検討した。母材として,修飾SEBS(SEBS-1),および末端カルボキシル基修飾SFBS(SEBS-3),末端アミノ基修飾SEBS(SEBS-1)および中鎖無水マレイン修飾SEBS(SEBS-2)を用いた。複合物は,二本ロールを用いて調製した。17.8vol%のSEBS-4複合物の引張モジュラスは,その無添加物の約三倍にまで増加した。MWCNT/SEBS-4の電気伝導度のパーコレーション闘値は,他と比較して高かった。これらの結果は,末端官能基が比較的少ない量であるのにもかかわらず,末端アミノ基が界面接着性に寄与していることを示唆する。

Abstract:石油は最も価値のある重要な資源であり,いかに石油の可採年数を延ばすかは人類共通の課題である。現時点の技術では,地下埋蔵量の約1/3しか取り出すことができない。しかしながら,高温・高圧力シールなどの技術を革新することができれば,埋蔵量の2/3が採掘可能となり,即ち可採量を倍増よることにより可採年数を倍に伸ばせる。本研究の目的は高性能高温高圧シール材の開発により,世界資源危機の回避に貢献することである。CNTゴム複合材の研究は多数おこなわれているが,CNTの均一分散およびCNT/マトリックスの接着性という2つの大きな課題があるため,大きな実用化の成功例は殆どない。本グループは以前開発したCNTの均一分散技術に加え,さらにCNTの熱処理と表面酸化などの手法を取り入れ,CNT/フッ素ゴムの接着性を改良するCNT表面処理技術の開発に成功した。フッ素ゴムとの接着改善のため,CNT表面に最適な酸化物を形成させ,安定した長い結合で,高温劣化と伸び低下の問題を解決し,耐熱性,耐圧性および過酷環境下での耐久性が飛躍的アップした高温高性能シール材の開発に成功した。

Abstract:Hydrocarbons such as oil and gas are critical resources for the functioning of human societies. Today, with the dearth of easy-to-reach reservoirs, the oil and gas industry is conducting more of its exploration and exploitation activities in difficult-to-reach and harsh environments. Key challenges in exploiting these new reservoirs include extremely high temperatures and pressures. The rubber composites obtained from the carbon nanotubes cellulation technology increases operational ratings from 175 °C and 140 MPa to 260 °C and 240 MPa for deeper, hotter conditions, and it is especially appropriate for deepwater reservoirs. We believe that our development of the sealing material to enhance oil recovery from deep, hot reservoirs may help double the R/P ratio. The cellulation technologies can be applied to various matrix composites such as metals, ceramics, and other polymers.

ナノカーボン材料とその応用

Abstract:Extraordinary chemical and physical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as well as the success of large-scale production by a catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) method, particularly with the use of a floating reactant technique, make them applicable in the fabrication of adsorbent, electrochemical electrode, and functional filler composite, etc at a possible low cost. Through judicious selection of transition metal, support materials and synthetic conditions (temperature, duration), it is possible to produce different types of CNTs such as multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs), double-walled CNTs (DWCNTs) and single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) selectively. In order to produce bulk quantities of CNT, a well-developed iron catalyst-based CCVD method so-called “Endo method” has been commonly used in the world. In this paper, we describe the synthetic techniques of various CNTs. The structural analysis will also be discussed in terms of nano-structure, and finally their practical applications of these CNTs will be described from the industrial point of view.

Abstract:We have studied the solvent resistance characteristics of non-cross-linked and cross-linked natural rubber composites reinforced by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). All the MWCNTs were individually dispersed within the rubber matrix where a three-dimensional cellulation structure was created when the added amount of MWCNTs exceeded 16 wt%. The non-cross-linked MWCNT-filled rubber composite was not soluble, but swelled in toluene. Upon detailed studies on the dried sample, it was found that a new phase was formed due to a strong bonding between the MWCNTs and the rubber matrix resulting in the cellulation structure. We found that a continuous three-dimensional structure at the interface between the MWCNTs and the natural rubber was extremely tough, and thus contributed to the improvement in the elastic modulus and thermal stability of natural rubber composites.

Abstract:The influence of characteristics of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the properties of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene (SBS) / MWCNT composites was investigated. The three types of MWCNTs which have a different in the degrees of graphitization (CNT-1; φ 87 nm, G/D ratio 9.09 and CNT-2; φ 87 nm, G/D ratio 0.78) and the diameter (CNT-3; φ 10-15 nm) were used as a filler. The composites were prepared using a mixing roll. The tensile moduli of the composites were improved even at low concentration of MWCNTs. The volume resistivity of the composite compounded with CNT-1 was markedly decreased at the lowest content of MWCNT, 4.4 vol%. The new peak of the loss tangent (tanδ) was observed around –10 °C in the temperature dependence of tanδ for the composites compounded with CNT-1. These results suggest that another relaxation system in SBS was newly formed by compounding CNT-1.

Abstract:In this study, we examined the improvement in dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM). The dispersion of MWCNTs was observed by an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Normally, MWCNTs were hardly dispersed into non-polar EPDM matrix, and large agglomerates of MWCNTs were observed in the composites. Increase of the mixing time decreased the number of large agglomerates of MWCNTs. At the same mixing time, the higher the milling temperature was, the worse the macro-dispersion of MWCNTs became. However, in order to disperse MWCNTs finely and uniformly, it was effective to raise the mixing temperature.
