Abstract:What kind of chemical substances may be contained in illegally disposed wastes can not be known; however in order to verify their environmental safety, there is much need for them to be analyzed. Since the analysis of unidentified substances can be extremely dangerous, the methodology for analyzing the environmental pollutants among illegally disposed wastes has been established. It is especially structured with the emphasis on how to apply LC/MS.

Abstract:We have developed a method of coloring pencil-written parts on paper in various colors by plasma irradiation. The pencil layer on the paper must be thick to form the various structural colors. Therefore, it was necessary to use a pencil containing high graphite component and to be sufficiently painted pencil lead component on the paper sample.

Abstract:Interaction between polystyrene nanoparticles and pectin has been studied. Flocculation of nanoplastics was occurred by the addition of pectin and Fe(III). This result contributes to the understanding of the behavior of nanoplastics in the water environment and the development of the method to remove nanoplastic from water.

Structural color on pencil lead formed by plasma etching

Abstract:A novel simple method to form the structural color on a pencil lead by the plasma irradiation for 40-120 seconds has been developed. The structural color was reproducibly formed by the plasma irradiation to the surface of a pencil lead. The color changed with the plasma irradiation time. The formed colors exhibited a luster and turned blue, yellow, red-purple, green, or pale red by the plasma irradiation time of 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 sec, respectively. The mechanism to form the structural color was discussed.

Effect of visible light irradiation on catalytic activity of gold nanoparticles and perylene adsorbed on silica gel

Abstract:A novel material (Au/Pe/SiO2: gold naoparticles and perylnee adsorbed on silica gel) was developed, and the effect of visible light irradiation on the catalytic activity of gold nanoparticles was studied. The irradiation resulted in the acceleration of the decompositions of nitrophenols and congo red by the catalytic reaction of gold nanoparticles in the presence of NaBH4.

Simple method for removal of pollutants from water using freeze-thaw treatment

Abstract:Simple method to remove environmental pollutants from water using freeze-thaw method has been developed. The method needs only a syringe, elastic band and cotton wool. The solution (20 mL) containing an environmental pollutant was added to a syringe. The part around the outlet of the syringe was covered with cotton wool in order to control the place of the pollutants in the frozen solution. The syringe was frozen by a freezer. The frozen sample was thawed. The pollutant was concentrated in the initial fraction (1 mL) of the thawing solution. The rest was fully thawed and frozen. By repeating the treatment 3 times, the pollutant was removed over 80% from the solution.

Glowing gold nanoparticle coating: restoring the lost property from bulk gold

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNP) usually show a red or blue color because of the localized surface plasmon resonance. We found that the AuNPs on the pecil graphite revealed golden color. The phenomenon would be caused by the interaction between the free electron of AuNPs and pencil graphite. The golden-colored AuNPs maintain a catalytic activity for the reduction of nitrocompounds in the presence of sodium borohydride.

Abstract:Porous TiC ceramic powder was used as a substrate for the SALDI/MS method for the detection of environmental pollutants (<500 Da). PFOS, pentachlorophenol, 2,4,5-T, imidacloprid, symetryn, benzyldimethyldocecylammonium chloride, N,N-dimethyldodecylamine-N-oxide, sodium dodecyl sulfate, methyl orange, methyl red, triclosan, pyrene, and benzo(a)pyrene were detected by this method.

Evaluation of the interaction between pesticides and a cell membrane model by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy analysis

Abstract:Interaction between a pesticide and the cell membrane was evaluated by SPR analysis. The pattern of the interaction of the 17 pesticides with the cell membrane model were visualized. The pesticides, showed a strong interaction with the lipid bilayer, reveal toxicities for cell membranes. In addition, the method reveal a correlation between the residual ratios and the no observable adverse effect level (NOAEL) values for chronic toxicity (1 year toxicity study in dogs).

Abstract:Novel method to extract gold as nano-particulate from wastes is demonstrated. The extraction of gold from wastes is achieved by applying AC voltage (100 V) for 5 seconds to the gold-containing wastes in a HEPES buffer solution containing phospholipid (DOPC) and sodium chloride.

Photodegradation of environmental pollutants using perylene adsorbed on silica gel as a visible-light photocatalyst

Abstract:Visible light induced electron transfer reaction of Pe/SiO2 (perylene adsorbed on silica gel) was studied. Irradiation by visible light to aqueous solution containing environmental pollutants, such as methyl orange, pentachlorophenol, and imidacloprid, resulted in the decomposition of these compounds. The continuous flow system of the reaction using a clolumn packed Pe/SiO2 powder was studied. The methyl orange aqueous solution in the presence of ascorbic acid was flowed in the column, and the column was irradiated by sunlight or visible light. The continuous decomposition of methyl orange was achieved by the system.)

Application of freeze-dried powders of Genetically engineered microbial strains as adsorbents for rare earth metal ions

Abstract:The adsorption behaviors of the rare earth metal ions onto freeze-dried powders of wild type and genetically engineered microbial strains, Bacillus subtilis 168 wild type (WT), lipoteichoic acid defective (ΔLTA), wall teichoic acid-defective (ΔWTA), and cell wall hydrolases-defective (EFKYOJLp), were compared. The distribution coefficients between the kinds of lanthanide ions by the powders were different. The results indicate that these powders could be applicable for the selective extraction of the lanthanide ions.

Application of fullerenes-extracted soot modified with ethylenediamine as a novel adsorbent of hexavalent chromium in water

Abstract:This is the first report that fullerenes-extracted soot, the by-product of fullerene production, was used to purify water. Fullerenes-extracted soot modified with ethylenediamine (FES-ED) shows high adsorption activity for Cr(VI). The maximum adsorption capacity of FES-ED for Cr(VI) was 93.5 mg/g. The adsorbent showed good reusability.

Abstract:This study develops a novel method to visualize the interaction between particulate matters and the liposome using a surface plasmon resonance spectroscope with a sensor-chip immobilized liposome as a model of the membrane of epithelial cells in the organ of respiration. Results obtained by the presented method are useful for not only the analysis of the risk assessment of aspirated particulates in the body, but also for estimation of the generation source of air pollution.

Abstract:Keratin colloidal solution extacted from wool has been used for the removal of Pb(II). The addition of keratin colloidal solution to a Pb(II) solution resulted in the formation and sedimentation of keratin-Pb aggregate. This method contributes to the water purification and the reuse of waste materials.

Abstract:The sediment core was obtained from Nishiyama Reservoir, 3 km east from the hypocenter of Nagasaki atomic bomb. The historical trends of heavy metal ion in the core samples were analyzed, and spiked peaks of Pu and Pb were observed at around 1945. It has been suggested that the peak of Pb would due to the influence of the atomic bomb attack by the analysis of Pb isotopic ratios.

Adsorption of rare earth ions onto the cell walls of wild type and lipoteichoic acid-defective strains of Bacillus subtilis

Abstract:The adsorption of rare earth metal ions onto cell walls of wild-type (WT) and lipoteichoic acid-defective (ΔLTA) strains of Bacillus subtilis 168 were studied. Removal (in percent) of Tm(III), La(III), and Eu(III) from aqueous solution by WT powder was greater than by ΔLTA powder strains of Bacillus subtilis 168. Furthermore, the ΔLTA powder readily coagulated and sedimented in the presence of rare earth ions, though such coagulation and sedimentation did not occur with WT powder. From these facts, it is concluded that the bioengineered microorganism, ΔLTA powder, can be applied to a novel useful adsorbent of rare earth ions.

Abstract:Large quantity of radioactive cesium species were emitted to environment by disaster at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. It is thought that people who lived around the accident site were exposed radioactive cesium, and the possibility that they exhibit the adverse effects of the exposure is of particular concern. In this research, aqueous solutions containing cesium ion and amino acids were analyzed by ESI/MS with the aim of gaining information on the interaction of cesium ion with amino acids or peptides. Acidic amino acid, in particular, showed a high affinity with cesium ion.

Abstract:The water of the Dodo river is acidic because of the influence of abandoned sulfur mines. The water quarity and microbial habitats in Dodo river system were investigated. The river water showed high concentration of sulfate ion (46 ppm). In addition, using the genetic PCR-DGGE method, it was confirmed that there were many microorganisms living.

Abstract:Since the polarities of hexachlorobenzene (registered as POPs) and pentachlorophenol differ largely, it has been difficult to conduct mass analysis without derivatization. This research has indicated that it is possible to analyze these compounds simultaneously, byusing LC/APCI/MS, or LC/APPI/MS. Especially when using APPI/MS, highly-sensitive analysis was possible.

Abstract:The bottom sediment core sample, which consisted of atmospheric fallouts of 200 years, was collected from the moat of Osaka Castle. By dating, measuring the concentration of heavy metals depth by depth, and carrying out analysis statistically, the historical transitions of heavy metal contamination into the atmosphere, at the central urban city, for the last 200 years were successfully comprehended.

Abstract:Flocculation using natto, a traditional Japanese food, as flocculant was investigated. We found that natto can be useful for a flocculant and experimental material for school environmental education.

Abstract:The antibacterial agent, zinc pyrithione is widely used in shampoos and antifoulant paints. Recently, it has been reported, that the zinc pyrithione causes teratogenesis in fish, however the details of such mechanism has not been revealed. Therefore, an investigation to examine the dynamic state of zinc pyrithione in organisms was carried out, by using electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry, so that how zinc pyrithione reacts with different kinds of amino acids could be found out. As a result, it has become apparent, that zinc pyrithione easily reacts with histidine.

Abstract:Osaka plains possess the geological stratum which is called the marine clay, containing relatively high concentration of elements, such as arsenic and iron. Also, since the marine clay contains a lot of sulfide, when it is exposed to the sun, its eluate becomes acidic. This leads to a possibility, that once the marine clay gets exposed by underground constructions, exceeding amount of arsenic and lead could be found during an elution test, in comparison to the environmental standard. In this research, by using the boring core sample from Osaka city area, elution behavior of arsenic and lead within the marine clay was observed, and correlation between the marine clay and soil contamination was examined.

Utilization of silkworm cocoon waste as a sorbentfor the removal of oil from water

Abstract:The damaged silkworm cocoons are generated by the sericulture industry. The possible utilization of such damaged silkworm cocoons as oil sorbent material was investigated. It was discovered that 1g of flocculate material made from the damaged silkworm cocoons absorbs about 40g of vegetable and motor oils. Thus, it has been made evident that it possesses high oil-sorption capacity compared to other types of oil sorbent materials. It has been deduced, that such utilization of damaged silkworm cocoons is meaningful, because it reuses industrial waste and enviromentally friendly material for the environmental purification.

Abstract:The core samples of soil collected at Osaka Plains were analized, for heavy metals and ions, in order to examine them compared to the environmental quality standard for soil. In the layer under no artificial influences, fluorine which exceeded the regulation was detected. In addition, acid soluble elements were also measured, and the elution behaviors of various elements were described.

Abstract:Conventionally, chlorothalonil, which is commonly used as a pestiside, has been a difficult object of sensitive analysis by using the mass spectrometry. Therefore, liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry using the photoionization has been applied to an analysis of chlorothalonil and its metabolites. By this method, the trace analysis of these chemical compounds has become possible. Application of this method in the environmental analyses and in the food analyses have been indicated.

Waste on the roadside, 'poi-sute' waste: Its distribution and elution potential of pollutants into environment

Abstract:The littered trash on the roadside called 'Poi - Sute' garbage around the campus of the Faculty of Textile Science, Shinshu University, were collected every month for the purpose of sampling, in order to check their compositions, distributions, and amounts. Furthermore, an amount of environmental pollutants generated by these littered trash were estimated. When studying the compositions of such garbages, the largest number was exhibited by cigarette butts. It is also indicated, that harmful substances such as arsenic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are eluted from littered cigarette butts possibly, into the environment.

Effect of mixing metal ions on DNA oxidative stress via Fenton-type reactions

Abstract:The combined effect of hazardous metals against DNA has been investigated. After mixing each of Fe, Cu, Cd, Cr, and Ni with DNA, hydrogen peroxide has been added in order to generate activated oxygen by Fenton-type reactions, so that the DNA stress can be measured. Next, 2 elements out of these 5 elements were chosen and mixed with DNA simultaneously, in order to measure the DNA stress after adding hydrogen peroxide. Afterward, the summations of DNA oxidative stress in both cases were compared. Cd and Ni had inhibited DNA oxidative stress caused by other metal ions. On the other hand, the synergistic effect was observed in the mixed Cu and Cr. Although the discussion is based on "in vitro", it has been revealed, that DNA oxidative stress induced by hazardous metals receives combined effect due to the interaction between hazardous metals and DNA.

Abstract:After collecting the bottom sediment core sample from a reservoir in Osaka City and performing the dating, the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for each sediment layer was measured. Since there was hardly any inflow or outflow of water into a reservoir, it was considered that its sediment mainly consisted of airborne deposits, and that sediment core sample had recorded the historical changes in the atmospheric pollution. As a result of the analysis, the highest concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was recorded during World War II. It was estimated that this was due to the air raid of Osaka City by the US forces.

Abstract:The p,p’-DDT is known as one of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and is a significant target within the environmental analysis. However, no measurement example by LC/MS had been reported. This article addresses the detection method of p,p’-DDT by LC/MS. It has been confirmed, that by using APPI method, p,p’-DDT can be detected. Furthermore,by connecting LC and constructing a calibration curve, the concentration to ppb level can be measured by LC/MS.

Method for the estimation of the past illegal dumping recorded in a sediment core

Abstract:After collecting the bottom sediment core sample from a reservoir in Osaka City and performing the dating, the concentration of heavy metals for each sediment layer was measured. Only in the heavy metal cases such as Cd, Ni, and Cr, that were used in metal platingindustry, a sudden elevation in concentration was observed around 1960s. After the statistical analyzation, it was deduced, that this sharp rise of concentration in 1960s was caused by the illegal dumpings of liquid waste from the metal plating factories. It was extremely rare for sediment core sample to be recording such environmental event.

Abstract:The environmental mutagens possess the danger to operate in such a way, which brings harmful influence to living creatures. Therefore, an establishment of analytical method regarding these substances in the environment is extremely important. Since there are many chemical substances within mutagens, that are highly polar and are not fit for an analysis by GC, the analytical method to use LC/MS has been actively pursued recently. Within this article, the environmental mutagens have been detected by LC/MS, and their measurement examples have been summarized. It has also revealed, that the application of LC/MS towards the environmental analysis is important, and that such application is highly effective.

Abstract:The hexachlorocyclohexane is known as one of the persistent environmental pollutants (POPs) and is a significant target within the environmental analysis. However, there had been no report of measurement examples by LC/MS. This article addresses the detection method of hexachlorocyclohexane by LC/MS. Hexachlorocyclohexane could be detected by using ESI/MS. As for the mechanism of ionization, the possibility of SN1 reaction occuring within the ESI interface to produce ions was indicated.

Abstract:The analysis of persistent pollutants is of utter importance. However, it is difficult to analyze many chlorine-based persistent pollutants, if using LC/MS, which has been popularly used recently. This article describes the detection method of polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbons, that are considered to be difficult to detect by LC/MS, and of lowly polarcompounds such as organochlorine pesticides. The detection of these compounds by LC/MS have been summarized so that the importance of such method and its future development can be recounted.

Abstract:The trimethylbenzenes are widely used as organic solvents and exist extensively in the indoor environment. In order to know the metabolism of 1,2,3-trimethylbenzenes and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzes, these substances were administered to rats and metabolites within their urine were measured. In general, methylbenzenes turn into safe hippuric acid during a metabolism process. However, it has been discovered, that trimethylbenzenes have high tendency to take part in a phenolic metabolism, which has high toxicity.

Influence of sodium benzoate on the metabolism of o-xylene

Abstract:The sodium benzoate has been used extensively as a food additive. It is known to be safely metabolized and be discharged from urine as hippuric acid. On the other hand, the indoor pollutant methylbenzenes turn themselves into benzoates during the process of metabolism. Thus, we had exposed both sodium benzoate and methylbenzene to rats and observed what would happen to their metabolism. As a result, it was revealed that the metabolism of methylbenzene was inhibited.

Abstract:The decomposition method of PFOS and PFOA by sonication has been developed. PFOS and PFOA are persistent substances, and the establishment of their decomposition method has been much desired. Within this article, the sonication has been irradiated to the PFOS and PFOA solution, and by using measurements by LC/MS, its mechanism has been observed. As a result, more than 50% of PFOS and PFOA had resolved after an hour of sonication irradiation.

Abstract:After collecting the bottom sediment from Osaka Castle, the dating was performed per each depth. When the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons within the sample was analyzed, it was ascertained, that the greatest amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were recorded during the war. It was considered, that this result was due to the influence inflicted by air raids to military arsenals, which were located around Osaka Castle. Within the 350 years of history in Osaka, it has become evident, that it was World War II, which had caused the most impact to the environment.

Abstract:Regarding the high mutagenicity of water in Yodo river district, 8 kinds of PBTA compounds, the PBTA1-8, have been isolated as part of the substances responsible for mutagenicity. The simultaneous highly sensitive analytical method has been developed for these 8 kinds of substances, by using LC/MS/MS. By this method, easy analysis of minimal amount in short time was possible. Several PBTAs have been detected by this method from the actual river water, proving that this method can actually be applied to the environmental analysis.

Detection of chlordecone by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

Abstract:The chlordecone is widely known as a highly persistent pesticide and is an important target within the environmental analysis. However, the measurement examples of the compound by LC/MS had not been reported. This article describes the analytical method of chlordecone by LC/MS/MS. By using LC/MS/MS, highly selective and sensitive analysis was achieved. In comparison with the traditional GC/MS method, the quantitative limit of this method is nearly 100 times lower, and it has been ascertained that this method is exceptionally effective in environmental analysis of infinitesimal quantity of chlordecone.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are referred to as carcinogens and are present widely in the environment as pollutants. The development of its analytical method is important, however in the past, trace analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by LC/MS has been extremely difficult. This article addresses the aim to analyze polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons within the sediment by LC/APPI/MS method. As a result, the analysis of these substances within an environmental sample at the ppb level was successfully achieved. Furthermore, the acquired analytical method was actually applied to the sample sediment, displaying its availability for the environmental analysis.

Abstract:The high mutagenicity of river water in Yodo river has generated the pursuit for such substances that are causing it. As a result, substances were identified as PBTAs produced from dyes, which originate from drainage at wastewater treatment plant in Kyoto. This article describes the novel analytical method of PBTA, in river water using LC/MS. The present method is very simple and the analysis of PBTAs is accomplished within a short time.

In this article, themethod to simultaneously analyze hippuric acid and mercapturic acid, that are urine metabolites of trimethylbenzenes has been introduced. The mercapturic acid produced from trimethylbenzenes within urine was detected successfully for the very first time.

Abstract:The cadmium is known as carcinogens. It is acutely important to gain information regarding the interaction between DNA base and cadmium, in order to consider the behavior cadmium gives to genes. Therefore, a solution mix of various DNA bases and cadmium was prepared, and by ESI/MS, its complex formation was observed. As a result, many different complexes were found regarding guanosine, such as a one which formed complex with guanosine quadroplex. However, regarding other bases, such diverse complex formation was not observed.

Abstract:Ziram is an organometallic complex which consists of zinc coordinated by two dithiocarbamates, and is used as a pesticide. It possesses various toxicities, therefore it is important to grasp its concentration distribution. Organometallic complex is lowly volatile, thus it is difficult to analyze by applying GC/MS, which are widely used in the environmental analysis. The detection was attempted using LC/MS, since it allowed the detection of nonvolatile substances. By using APCI method, ziram was directly detected.

Abstract:It has been discovered by ESI/MS, that nonylphenol ethoxylates forms complexes with alkali metals as if with crown ether. Difference in length of ethoxylate chains caused different complex formations with alkali metals. The longer the chains were, the more tendency there was to form complexes with alkali metals, which possessed larger atomic radiuses, indicating the supramolecular behavior.

These substances are unstable thermally, and a measurement by GC has proved to be difficult. Although the luminescent method to perform sensitive analysis had been reported, derivatization was also required. Within this article,the direct detection method of nitro aromatic compounds such as nitropyrene, by using LC/APCI/MS has been described. By applying this method, nitropyrenes which were isolated within the environment were successfully detected.

Abstract:The mercapturic acid in urine is a metabolite of methylbenzenes, which are considered to be significant targets as indoor pollutants. Therefore mercapturic acid is an effective barometer of exposures to methylbenzenes. In this article, the analytical method to detect mercapturic acid in urine by using solid-phase extraction and LC/MS has been described. By using octadecylsilyl silica gels as solid-phase extraction, mercapturic acid was successfully extracted from urine. With this method, an easy and speedy analysis of mercapturic acid has been achieved.

Abstract:When DNA is attacked by hydroxy radical, especially C8 of guanine base is hydroxylated. This hydroxylated guanine base is cut and emitted into the bloodstream as 8-OHdG. This is to say the amount of 8-OHdG within urine is a good barometer to see the stress level caused by hydroxy radical in a living organism. Within this article, easy method to measure 8-OHdG in urine by LC/MS has been developed.

Abstract:An observation was made on the photoreaction of homonaphthoquinone with spiro-linked diphenylcyclopropane rings. The carbonyl group of naphthoquinone was photoexcited and pulled hydrogen from ethano spiro-linked portion. Furthermore, it was disclosed,that carbon from ethano portion and carbonyl carbon bind themselves within intramolecular reaction. Also, it has been revealed that this reaction differs owed to the configuration of ethano spiro-linked portion.

Abstract:The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons reveal carcinogens and exist widely in the environment as pollutant. Conventionally, it had been difficult to detect polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by using LC/MS. There were few examples of detection of PAHs by ESI method, because the polarity of PAHs were low. This article describes the trace analysis of PAHs with LC/MS, by having tropylium cation as a post-column HPLC reagent, since it interacts with PAHs.

Abstract:By using ESI (Electrospray Ionization) method, a comparing investigation was made between cation complexation of quinocrown and cation complexation of benzocrown ethers. Quinocrown ethers are constructed by adopting crown ethers onto quinone skeleton, which possesses electron-withdrawing capability. When quinocrown ethers are ring-fused with quinone, it forms distortion, revealing how quinocrown ethers have less metallic affinity than benzocrown ethers. The new knowledge was acquired regarding the influence on cation complexation due to the structures of crown ethers.

Abstract:It is difficult to detect polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons directly byESI/MS. By using how polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons possess electrons, tropylium cation with π-π interaction was added to them, so that tropylium cation can form π-π complexes with PAHs. The method to detect such complexes by ESI/MS has been developed. By adding tropylium cation after a column separation, an analysis of PAHs by LC/MS has become possible.

Abstract:Xylene is a volatile organic compound which has high concentration of pollutant in indoors. The methylbenzyl mercapturic acid is an urine metabolite of xylene, and the method to measure it in urine has been developed. HPLC has been used for the analysis. Xylene was administered to a rat and its collected urine was put through solid-phase extraction, before the analysis by HPLC was carried out. It was made clear that the discharge rate of these substances is actually slower by far than expected.

Abstract:Xylene is known as a major indoor pollutant, therefore it is important to understand its influence on human bodies. Within this article, the synthetic method of a glutathione conjugate of m-, p-xylenes, the m-, p-methylbenzyl mercapturic acids has been indicated. The m-, p-methylbenzyl mercapturic acid is expected to be an urine metabolite of m-, or p-xylenes. By this method, the effective synthesis of these expected metabolites has become possible.

Abstract:The conformation of trans-1,4-dimethyl-7,7-diphenylbicyclo[4.1.0]hepta-2,5-dione, which generates from a reaction between homobenzoquinone and triethylamine has been determined. It has been discovered, that this substance takes a "half-chair conformation."

Abstract:The photoinduced electron transfer reaction has occured between amine donors and homobenzoquinone, which has methyl group displaced benzoquinone with ring-fused cyclopropane. From amine doners, an addition reaction of hydrogens occurred to the double bond regions of homobenzoquinone. A ring-opening reaction of cyclopropane such as homonaphthoquinone did not occur. By examining the mechanism of this reaction through MOPAC, the difference in reaction compared to homonaphthoquinone has been described.

Conversion of donor-substituted homonaphthoquinones to indenonaphthoquinones via intramolecular photoinduced electron-transfer

Abstract:A new example regarding the intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer has been presented. Irradiation of anisyl homonaphthoquinone in the presence of magnesium ion resulted in the quantitative formation of indenonaphthoquinone. When there was no magnesium, this reaction did not proceed at all. It is considered, that after the intramolecular electron transfer occured from anisyl group to naphthoquinone skelton, the charge separation was stabilized by magnesium, triggering cleavage reaction of cyclopropane and resulting in the reaction.

Abstract:An unique reaction would be expected from cyclopropane, due to its large steric distortion. In this article, photoinduced electron-transfer was carried out between various kinds of donors and homonaphthoquinones, which are constructed from naphthoquinone skeleton with electron-withdrawing capability and ring-fused cyclopropane. An observation was made from the perspective of reaction mechanism, concerning what causes different donors to produce largely different products. Furthermore, it was made clear, that different reactions have occured, when the substituent of cyclopropane are changed.

Abstract:The amount of carbon dioxide emission has been increasing and its influence on the environment is of great concern. It is desirable to exchange carbon dioxide into useful substances and use them. In this article, by using semiconductor ultrafine particles of ZnS or CdS, metals from zinc or cadmium are deposited on the surface of ultrafine particles. Then, composites of metals and semiconductor ultrafine particles are adjusted in order to use them for the photoreduction of carbon dioxide as photocatalyst.

Abstract:The cleavage reaction of carbon-carbon bond, which possesses large steric distortion is expected for many applications in various reactions. In this article, photoinduced electron-transfer was carried out between arene donors and homonaphthoquinones, which were constructed from naphthoquinone skeleton with electron-withdrawing capability and ring-fused cyclopropane. Under the coexistence with naphthalene, when irradiated with light, homonaphthoquinone produced xanthylium.
